Utah Gymnastics vs UCLA January 23, 2015

Had the pleasure of photographing an early season showdown between two of the best teams from two of the most storied programs in college gymnastics: Utah vs UCLA.  Some beautiful gymnastics, that's for sure.  I brought along my trusty but seldom used Canon 200mm f/1.8 lens and after viewing the images from it, I'm kicking myself for not using it for more of the meet.  Here are a bunch of photos from the event, some are quite typical of the images I usually grab from a meet; others represent a bit more experimentation.  Go Red Rocks!

  1. Very nice work Russ. I saw you brought the heavy artillery (200/1.8) and was looking forward to seeing the results. I was disappointed not to see your images on the U’s site for this meet and very glad you posted here. You do such a good job of separating the distractions of the background from your subject. The floor shots and Kari on the beam (#15) are probably my favorites of this group. It was generous of you to give UCLA a few images. There are some nice ones of Samantha Peszek. She is a real talent.

    1. Ivo: Thank you for your comment. It means a lot coming from you since I know you have a discerning eye and that you are a long-time follower of the Red Rocks. I didn't have a chance to see much of Samantha Peszek, but what I saw was impressive.
